We currently have about 90 Rhode Island Red hens, and a handful of Araucanas (they lay the beautiful blue eggs).
We give our chickens organic, soy-free, corn-free feed made here in Montana. They also eat unsprayed pasture greens, bugs, worms, and any other creepy crawlies they like right from the ground. Kitchen scraps are also brought out daily.
Our feathered friends spend their nights in our "egg-mobile" -- a coop on wheels that we move through pasture each day. The coop also houses their feed and nesting boxes. At sundown we push in the ramps and close the hatches to tuck them in for a safe sleep.
While chickens are very resilient, they are also considered tropical birds. Their feathers keep them warm in the colder months, but their little feet and the combs on their heads can get frostbite when the temps drop. To keep our chickens more comfortable we move them into our greenhouse over winter. This also helps to naturally fertilize our soil for the next season of growing.
